Luminita Georghui won the Berlin Golden Bear for best actress for her very fine performance of a mother who learns that her college-age son has accidentally killed a child while perhaps driving recklessly in passing another vehicle. Acting is pretending to be what you are not and in this role, Luminita tries every trick in the book to manipulate government operators into shaving down the criminality of her son’s traffic accident. In the beginning of the film, we quickly recognize her ability to manipulate, but then the line between manipulation and true feelings becomes blurred. Only a great actress could pull this act off. This is one of the best films of the year. Romania’s film industry, now free of the Soviet Union, is beginning to reach the top in some of its films.
