SUMMARY: Amos McGee's days are very predictable. He goes to work every day and takes care of the animals at the zoo. But one day, Amos wakes up sick and must stay in bed. The animals depend on his friendship and are disconcerted when Amos does not show up. So the animals go to him. They entertain him and take care of him just as he usually does for them. ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations absolutely make this book a success. They are created by hand using woodblock printing techniques and pencil. They are absolutely adorable. The illustrator gives so much character to these characters through her drawings. I love Amos' pant legs that ride too high. I love the cute little details on the animals such as penguin's socks and turtle's superior smile when he wins the race. The colors are muted in just the right way giving the book a very homey feel. THE GOOD: This story is absolutely adorable. I love the friendship between Amos and the animals and the obvious love on both sides. I love how the animals could not stay away when Amos got sick and how they stayed through the night with him. This is a story of unconditional friendship. This would be a perfect book for a little one's own sick day in bed. THE NOT SO GOOD: None RECOMMENDED AGE RANGE: Age 3-7
