Evvy has been banished from the Winding Cricle Temple, at least temporarily. Her constant getting into scraps with other initiates has been causing problems, so Rosethorn takes the young stone mage with her on a trip to find out why the plants are dying on an island to the south of them. Along the way Evvy, who is really not good with people, has to learn what is causing the deaths, the bad water, and the shaking ground, all while becoming more and more a master of her unique magic. This book was originally written as a radio play for Tamora's friend's production company. This may account for the lack of extra plots, the "thinness" to the story that some have complained about. Still, this is Pierce, and while the heroine may not be Becca or Aly, the story still has enough elements to keep the Pierce fan satisfied.
