In this mystery novel, Joanna Brady is the head of police in a small town in Arizona near Tucson. Half the book is about background information, usually the marital and family relationships of her main characters. This information is used as filler to solving the murder of a single mom recently released from prison. If you are interested in the character development of Jance's main character, Joanna Brady, this book might interest you; otherwise it is weak as a mystery/police procedural novel. This was my first mystery book by Jance and probably my last.
