Add a CommentA great picture book about community and sharing. Omu, an older woman in the community, shares her wonderful smelling thick red stew. She shares with anyone who asks without a second thought. When she realizes that she has given away all of the stew, her community respond by sharing what they have. A great message!
Thank You Omu is the same as saying queen in Nigerian. For author Oge Mora it is the same as saying grandma. This heartfelt story is about friendship and good food.
In one tall apartment building Omu was diligently working on her pot of stew for dinner. The delicious smell drifted out the window and into the street. It wasn’t long before random people began to knock on her door. A cab driver, shop owner, doctor, actor, dancer and even a baker were some of the few who stopped by. The smell was so mouth watering they had to ask for a taste. All throughout the day Omu shared her delicious stew. When it was time for dinner, she realized she had no more stew for herself. There was a knock at the door. What do you think happened next?
This lovely story of food and friends is illustrated with paint and collages. Young readers can flip through these pages to find all sorts of fun recognizable objects. Beginners will be able to easily navigate through the simple sentence structures. This would be a great read-a-loud for any classroom. It’s also a great way to share stories about favorite foods and gatherings with friends and family.
A story about giving what you can and how the kindness you give comes back to you. I love the mixed media illustrations and the homey feel of the whole story. It's as if you can smell the soup and feel the warmth of Omu's home.
Very sweet book, and I liked that we got to learn a little Nigerian culture, too! An early reader might struggle with this one, though.
My daughter has requested this book for days in a row! She'll sit and look at the illustrations when we aren't reading it, too. This book is going to end up in our permanent collection! I agree with all the other reviews; SUCH a great story that teaches community no matter ethnicity, occupation, age or socioeconomic status. I was looking for other culturally diverse books to add to the Build Your Library curriculum that were a tad more modern than the books suggested and this did NOT disappoint! Highly recommend.
A beautiful book about the joy of sharing meals with people you love. The paper-cut collage style illustrations are enchanting and a feast for the eyes.
A wonderful read-aloud to explore generosity, thankfulness, community, and...delicious stew! The repetition and rhythmic language make this a fun story for children to help retell, and the collage illustrations are simply gorgeous. Share this story during winter holidays or any time of year.
Who doesn’t love gathering around to share a delicious meal? In this story, Omu makes a big pot of stew that her neighborhood can’t get enough of. To thank her, they all get together to plan a surprise. It’s a warm story about sharing, community, and yummy food!
One of my favourite picture books of 2018! A comforting story of community, gathering, giving, and gratitude that is initiated from the travelling scent of Omu's pot of "scrumptious" red stew.
Tender and funny story, Outstandingly fabulous art, and topical issues. Highly recommended. Rose in PR
