Living in rural Georgia in 1941, sixteen-year-old Alice-Ann has her heart set on her brother's friend Mack; despite their five-year age gap, Alice-Ann knows she can make Mack see her for the woman she'll become. But when they receive news of the attack on Pearl Harbor and Mack decides to enlist, Alice-Ann realizes she must declare her love before he leaves. Though promising to write, Mack leaves without confirmation that her love is returned. But Alice-Ann is determined to wear the wedding dress her maiden aunt never had a chance to wear-- having lost her fiancé in the Great War. As their correspondence continues over the next three years, Mack and Alice-Ann are drawn closer together. But then Mack's letters cease altogether, leaving Alice-Ann to fear history repeating itself. Dreading the war will leave her with a beautiful dress and no happily ever after, Alice-Ann fills her days with work and caring for her best friend's war-torn brother, Carlton. As time passes and their friendship develops into something more, Alice-Ann wonders if she'll ever be prepared to say good-bye to her one true love and embrace the future God has in store with a newfound love. Or will a sudden call from overseas change everything?

It's 1941. Alice-Ann has loved Mack - one of her brother's best friends since she was 12 years old. Shortly after Alice-Ann turns 16, she tells Mack her feelings because he is going to enlist. He tells her that he can't promise her anything but asks her to write to him. They write back and forth while Alice-Ann dreams of marrying Mack one day. She also writes to Carlton, another one of her brother's best friends.

Then Carlton is being sent home from the war to recuperate because he's been hurt bad. He is blind and can't walk. He was injured while filming, hit in the head. He fell far and hard. His girlfriend Betty-Jo breaks up with him not long after he comes back home. Carlton's sister Maeve who is Alice-Ann's best friend asks her to start reading to Carlton.

So, Alice-Ann agrees to and does so every day after work. She finds out to her surprise that Carlton wants to know her thoughts and dreams. "At first, she'd been unable to--so rarely did anyone ask her what she thought. Then, as time went on, she spoke more freely. Sometimes, Alice-Ann thought, she found herself looking more forward to their chats than she did reading to him"

Time goes on. Alice-Ann doesn't hear from Mack but she continues to want to be with him. She still believes herself to be in love with him. Is he missing or is he dead? No one knows.

Carlton gradually gets back his sight and then gradually also begins to walk again. Then one day he tells Alice-Ann that she is beautiful.

Nelson (her brother) asks her "Is Carlton sweet on you, Alice-Ann?"

Can Alice-Ann say good-bye to Mack and let herself fall in love with Carlton?
