Virtuoso storyteller Helen Dunmore returns with a thrilling Cold War espionage tale in which the closest ties are called into question and nobody is quite who they seem. It's London, 1960. The Cold War is at its height, and a spy may be a friend or neighbor, colleague or lover. Two colleagues, Giles Holloway and Simon Callington, face a terrible dilemma over a missing top-secret file. At the end of a suburban garden, in the pouring rain, Simon's wife, Lily, buries a briefcase containing the file deep in the earth. She believes that in doing so she is protecting her family. What she will learn is that no one is immune from betrayal or the devastating consequences of exposure.

This story had elements of espionage, crime, even murder. However, the author did not take us down the typical road with"who done it?". The elements of mystery were clear. Instead we peeked into the personal lives of the characters which made for a very readable novel.

1960s London is beautifully evoked in this story of a family enduring a crisis of great magnitude and peril. The background is the Cold War, and a recovering Britain exhibits the paranoia and ultimate scapegoating that set this novel on it's course. The characters are fully realized. If you are looking for a thriller that doesn't involve car chases, explosives and superhuman feats, look no further. The parallels to our own suspicion of "the other" today make this book even more worthwhile.

This is another excellent novel from Dunmore. It is set in Cold War Britain but it is not a thriller. It tells the story of a married couple with three children and what is gradually exposed about their lives. The children are exceptionally well-portrayed with credibility and sympathy. This is a subtle novel about love and steadfastness.
