Lynn's life is full with choir practice, school, shopping for the perfect jeans, and dealing with her free-spirited mother. Then one day her life is saved by a mysterious girl named Blossom, who introduces Lynn to her own world and family, both more bizarre, yet somehow more sane, than Lynn's own. Blossom's family is a small band of outcasts and eccentrics who live secretly in an ingenious bunker beneath a city reservoir. The Underlanders forage and trade for the things they need (Is it useful or lovely?), living off the things Citizens throw away. Lynn is enchanted and amazed. But when she inadvertently reveals their secret, she is forced to take measure of her own motives and lifestyle, as she figures out what it really means to be a family, and a friend. Classic Sarah Ellis, this novel is smart, rich, engaging and insightful.

What begins as a family story of a teen with an irresponsible mother quickly becomes a fascinating look at underlanders: city people who live “off the grid” with no regular jobs, schooling, or housing.

The whole thing about the under landers are confusing. I don't understand, what are they?

this is a decent book with very nicely developed characters. i enjoyed the way their personalities were portrayed. however, i din't like how (since it was written in third person) the book jumped from (as an example) Lynn's P.O.V. to Shakti's P.O.V. (for a bit) overall, a pretty good book

This book was not what expected of it. It turned out much, much worse. The plot was so disappointing, it moved slowly and I never got to experience any suspense, or really get into the book and the events happening. I guess the characters and world building were okay, even well done, but I simply did not enjoy the book. And I felt like there was just so much filler. I must say that this is a well written book, but I didn't enjoy it one bit.

It was very interesting to read. I especially liked how the author was able to show that the underlanders were different not only through visualization, but through how they spoke, as if they didnt live around normal people. I hope to see a sequel soon because it would be very enjoyable to read.

This book gave me a pleasant moment and numerous curiosity at the same time.I always wonder why and how
"they" (Blossom,Fossick,Tron,Larch..etc) became a underlander in the first place. How did they ENJOY being an underlander?Would you relish being an underlander? What was the reason Shakti betrayed Lynn by spilling her secret about the underlander? Was it because she was looking for a new job? What kind of mother would deceive her one-and-only daughter? How would you feel if you experienced the same thing?I would feel a thousand violent rage boiling inside my soul since i detest a dishonest person. Why did everyone mistreated Lynn after Shakti's action on the live-news-report?What was the big deal if she was unable to violate the secret she never meant to tell?Honestly,i can't imagine how/why Blossom forgiven Lynn for what her mother provoke the world? Was it because she doesn't want to lose her one-and-only companion?..Or is it because she's just a kind,warm-hearted,forgiving and a sweet type of person? What would you do in that situation?I wonder if(in the future),Lynn want's to invite Blossom to join the "Diode".If yes, then Lynn would probably would need to tell the "Diode" everything(including secrets)about the underlanders. If no,then Lynn might lose her friendship with Kas and Celia for eternity.I wonder what Lynn would verdict. This book is terrific and outstanding story that will introduce you between friendship and 2 different world that will change your mind forever.

I really enjoyed this book because it was very interesting. The way the under landers lived was very unique and I really would like to know even more about them. I really enjoyed the way Lynn did all these different activities with Blossom and that they became very good friends. The characters were very unique as well, great book!

This was a very interesting, unique, and well written book. While Lynn (aka Lindisfarne, ikr Celtics omg) is at home and her friends are away on a choir trip she meets an amazing new friend named Blossom who is very different from her and changes her life forever. The author does a really good job of writing from the perspective of a teenager, in fact sarah ellis is probably one of the best this year for character development. Her underlanders tron, larch, fossick, and blossom were awesome. Blossom does not attend school and lives life collecting and using objects that others have thrown away. This book opens your eyes to the evils of consumerism. You should read this. Right now.

This book was nice but not as attracting from the other books I've read. The way the author had written the book was a little complicated for me as if the book had been rushed. Once Lynn started to meet the Underlanders, then my brain started to switch on for the interest. Overall, it was a nice book but not those " I Want to Read it for 24/7" kind of books. Here are my three questions:
1. If Lynn never liked her mother in the first place, why couldn't she just ask the Underlanders if she can move in with them? Since she's been visiting them often. 2.What convinced Tron to follow his friends footsteps and travel overseas? 3. Is there such thing as" Underlanders" in reality? (Somewhere in the world)
