"Both a biography of an irreverent African Grey parrot--given to asking "Whaddya know?" and announcing "Party time!"--and an exploration of the history of birds/ dinosaurs, the relationships between humans and birds, our notions of language and intelligence, and our tendency to "other" anything that is different from us, Tuco also describes Brett's own painful experience of being othered as an androgyne. Provocative, profound, hilarious, and moving, Tuco is most of all the extraordinary story of Brett's decades-long relationship with this singular bird, what Brett calls "a story we made together."--

The author's genetic condition is only one aspect of this book. He uses his past as a springboard of sorts to discover and reflect upon various topics, including climate change, survival of species, the history of the earth itself, and so on. As with many challenging conversations, his writing encompasses varying viewpoints and ranges widely. I'm finding so many things to contemplate from slightly different angles as I read this book. It's very, very good.

While I could sympathize with the author's hard times due to his genetic condition, I did not find the book well-written. Long and tedious descriptions that did not add to the core of the story. Could not finish.
