Wife, mother, daughter, child advocate...Ellen Moore is all of these things. Keeping up with the schedules of a busy family, 3 young children and a husband who is the high school baseball coach, her demanding work as a social worker and the needs of her clients, and the only daughter of a recently widowed mother has become a juggling act for Ellie. Rushing to work one hot summer morning, late for another meeting, Ellie doesn't hear her husband telling her he has strapped the baby into her car seat. When she receives a crisis call from one of her young clients, she immediately calls 911 and heads to the family's home. Arriving at the home she hurriedly locks her van and joins the patrol officers waiting to enter the house. After dealing with the current crisis, she returns to her van to find the windows broken, and folks from the neighborhood trying to revive her baby. Coping with the guilt of endangering her precious baby girl, who may suffer from irreversible injuries if she survives at all, and facing possible criminal charges is tough enough. The last thing Ellie needs is another case. But when her mother finds and "adopts" Jenny Briard, a ten-year-old alone on the streets who needs another social worker like she needs a "hole in her head," their lives collide and both Jenny and Ellie find the healing they both desperately need.

Gripping from the first sentence - easy to get immersed and lose track of time until the end. Excellent writing. Will watch for more from this author.
