In a wonderful spoof on the beloved children’s bedtime story by Margaret Wise Brown, Goodnight Moon, Harriet Ziefert depicts some underwear-wearing creatures who are preparing to go to sleep for the night.
However, the friends – a bear, a beaver, a bunny, a turtle, a deer, a skunk and a monster – are not in their usual cozy beds. Instead, they are in their sleeping bags, outside, on a camping trip. And instead of saying goodnight to all the things in their bedrooms, they are bidding goodnight to their flashlights, insect spray, marshmallows on sticks., etc. “Goodnight pillow fight. Goodnight mosquito bites. Goodnight frights; goodnight lights.”
With everyone tucked in tight, it should be a quiet night, but alas, it’s anything but. There are mice running by, owls hooting, a frog in Bear’s sack, scary dark shadows, itches and twitches.
Then a thunderstorm begins. The thunder booms and the rain begins to pour down.
The animals quickly run into a nearby cabin, where, safe from the stormy weather, they climb into dry clothing and dry sleeping bags, and with their underwear hanging up to dry, they prepare once again to fall asleep. “Goodnight, goodnight, underwear!”
