The riveting New York Times bestselling tale of romance and suspense with an "edge-of-your-seat conclusion" ( Booklist )

Julie Barenson's young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died - a Great Dane puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now four years have passed. Still living in the small town of Swansboro, North Carolina, twenty-nine-year-old Julie is emotionally ready to make a commitment to someone again. But who?

Should it be Richard Franklin, the handsome, sophisticated engineer who treats her like a queen? Or Mike Harris, the down-to-earth nice guy who was her husband's best friend? Choosing one of them should bring her more happiness than she's had in years. Instead, Julie is soon fighting for her life in a nightmare spawned by a chilling deception and jealousy so poisonous that it has become a murderous desire...

This was a suspenseful Nicolas Sparks book and good entertainment. I enjoyed it once I got into it. It took about 100 pages. It was traditional Nicolas Sparks with a nice love story and tragedy built in.

For Sparks, it was okay. Getting Mike & Julie in love as a little too drawn out. The suspense of Richard was enjoyable. Sparks' novels aren't always thrillers and the aspect certainly helped. The latter half of the book was a mess. A third of the way from the end two cop characters are introduced who take up the main story line while the main characters sit on the side lines (in a cabin) while these new characters unfold what's made into more of mystery than it needs to be. Would have preferred the mystery at the end be uncovered along the way by the main characters. Made for an uneven story.

The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks is a really great book. It takes place in Swansboro, North Carolina. As much as I enjoyed the last half of the book I didn't really like the first half. Simply because of how long and slow I found it to be. The beginning to me seemed like it really dragged on especially with character development. I absolutely loved the relationship that Julie has with Singer her Great Dane and how he was almost symbolic of Jim (Julie's deceased husband). The book starts off with Julie finally being able to start looking for a new relationship 4 years after Jim's death. She starts dating Richard Franklin but after a few dates, realizes there's nothing there and ends it. All the while Mike Harris who was Jim's best friend and best man at his wedding has had feelings for Julie for a very long time and they start seeing each other. Richard not being able to handle the rejection doesn't take this very well and becomes very creepy and stalker like. Through out the novel we see what made Richard become this way and what happened in his childhood and past. The ending is very heart pounding and powerful and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. This book is kind of different from other Nicholas Sparks novels because there was some chilling and suspenseful moments in this book that his other novels don't have.

This book by Sparks really made me cry, and I normally don't cry during books. He shows the power of love; through thick and thin. Another aspect I see repeating is the whole stocker thing. This was used heavily in this novel and in The Last Song, which is one of my favorites by Sparks. All in all a great read!

I'm almost done reading this book and it is soo different from the other Nicholas Sparks books I've read. I love how it has me in suspense almost the whole time. GREAT read! :D

The characters were believable, human. That went a logn way toward enjoying the experience for me. I absolutely loved the element of the dog in there too. A great read, as are all his novels. I would definitely recommend it.
