This is one of those books I've been meaning to check out for a few years now -- and I'm so glad I finally did. Cole's illustrations take up nearly as much space as the text (much like a Brian Selznick book), and they're so lovely -- Celeste is adorable, without seeming twee or cartoon-y. The story itself is a simple one about the importance of finding a home, and how people can become your home, and the security that provides, and I found it particularly moving in our current political climate. There are occasional moments that might be upsetting to younger kids -- a rat getting killed by a mouse, or live birds being killed and pinned so that they can be drawn -- but overall I think Cole succeeds at somehow making this really sweet but also oddly unsentimental at the same time? I'm not sure how he managed it, but I thought this was really good.

Celeste is a marvelous character with a wondrous vocabulary.
This is a suspenseful story even for those not usually fans of animal fantasy. Facts about Audubon are seamlessly worked into the plot.
The book is attractive both for its rich language and for its detailed drawings. This would make a gripping read aloud choice.
