The narrative unfolds through three points of view: Charles Darwin's own as he travels the world aboard the Beagle; his youngest daughter Lizzie's as she strives to understand the embattled anger that infected her father at the height of his fame; and that of present-day anthropologist Hugh Kellum, whose obsession with Darwin drives him beyond the accepted boundaries of scholarly research.

A lot of nonsense. Absurd, chaotic plot. Contradicts history. Malicious attributions. Corny and silly. (Does have one good satiric scene: Victorians explain Biblical wonders to worldly Indian chief.)

Excellent book. My favorite one by Darnton. He doesn't go way too far into the details from his research and instead concentrates on the story

While doing research on a tropical island, Hugh meets the beautiful Beth and is immediately in love. But, alas, they are soon separated. When they meet again, he finds out that she is doing the same topic for their separate thesis. And soon they join forces and go in search of the elusive diary of Darwin''s supposed dim-witted and lesser known daughter. What tragic story can they unearth about Darwin? He was a robust young man on the Beagle, much admired and quite clever. But why did it take him twenty years to write his scientific classic? Why was he always so ill with so many different symptoms? Only Hugh and Beth can find the truth! This quest novel takes the Charles Darwin story and stands it on its head.
