Great narrative of race-relations, friendship, and summer. A story about little girls with the same values. And suitable for grades 1-3. The illustration are over the top good for the setting.

The charming illustrations and pitch perfect prose make this picture book an outstanding choice for elementary school-aged kids. I feel a sense of nostalgia reading it--drawn back in time to when I was a kid playing outside all day with the other neighborhood kids, til the street lights came on. I would have loved to spend my summers sitting on the fence with Clover and Annie.

So sweet, so moving. Thoughtful text and emotional illustrating. Read it to my grandsons (12 & 10) and they were very moved (in spite of themselves - it's a 'baby book' after all).
