Like many of Hopkins works, this book features troubled familial relationships, alcoholism, and physical abuse. The realistic struggles of the women in this traditional (yet very troubled) Mormon family are both intriguing and sympathetic. Many teens may relate to the pressure placed on the family to appear perfect in spite of the many flaws that are dormant under the surface.

I love Ellen's books a lot. She guided me through a bad situation or two. I love that her books shed light on parts of religion and society that most overlook. Her books are hilarious, yet too real.

seems to follow the same formula as many other ellen hopkins novels, but still an interesting and quick read.

Another great book by Ellen Hopkins . Didn't care for the ending so much but she redeemed herself by writing the sequel SMOKE. Reading that one now .

"I crumbled like biscotti, in need of black coffee. It demanded I try it. A small sip wrinkled my nose. A big gulp went down like water. It was bitter. Aunt J offered sugar and cream, but I wanted the truth of coffee."
